3-The Autopilot and Emergency Brake mode
Mel Robbins divides our brain reactions, decisions in two modes: Autopilot and Emergency Brake.
And guess what is the one our brain likes better? AUTOPILOT!
Addiction to Autopilot mode
Did you ever drive somewhere and once you arrived didn’t remember how you drove there? Actually, our brain is doing as much autopilot mode as possible.
It’s so much more comfortable! Your brain likes ROUTINE. it likes predictable and controllable environments or situations, etc.
And anytime you do anything that’s different from your normal routine, guess what your brain does: EMERGENCY BRAKE! And it has that reaction for pretty much EVERYTHING!
And even acknowledging that, the truth is, it’s these kinds of routine that are killing you! you get bored to death!
So to get what you want, you will have to FORCE yourself, to PUSH yourself out of your comfort zone. Everything that’s a break from your normal routine is going to require force.
Mel has quite an interesting theory about why people get stuck in life:
Our body has requirements and is wired to send us signals. For example, what are we feeling when we need food, water?
So to her, when you feel stuck or dissatisfied in your life, that’s a SIGNAL! And it’s not a signal that your life is broken.
It’s a signal that one of your most basic needs is not being met: Your NEED FOR EXPLORATION.
Outside of your comfort zone inside for the rabbit hole!
Everything about your life, about your body, grows! Your cells regenerate, your hair, your nails, everything grows your entire life. Your soul needs exploration and growth too! And the only way you’ll get it is by going beyond your routine, and so by forcing yourself to be UNCOMFORTABLE.
Forcing yourself to get OUTSIDE, out of your head and past your feelings. If you’re in your head, you’re behind enemy lines.
If you listen to what you feel when it comes to what you want, you won’t get it, because you will never feel like it. Your feelings are screwing you!
Don’t care about what you feel, CARE about what you want!
